Great Gift: Cynthia Rowley Ruffle Throw

My co-worker deserves a special place in heaven. And I say this not just because she is God's Gift to the education system (no exaggeration) but she got me an incredible Cynthia Rowley Ruffle Throw as a thank you gift. (On a side note, I'm not sure why she's thanking me. Maybe for doing some photocopying? SHE'S the one with the unbelievable talent who helped me while I was working outside (far outside) of my professional niche. I should be thanking her. But I digress...)

When I have down time, I love to relax with a cup of coffee, a blanket, and a good read. And so, I had been looking for a cream throw for my couch. Leave it to my talented co-worker to find the PERFECT throw. With ruffles even. So me.

Thank you, Sarah.

Strawberries and Rhubarb

Strawberries are in abundance so I picked up some locally grown strawberries from Longo's. My grandmother had also given me some rhubarb (thanks Grandma!) so I set out to make strawberry rhubarb pie. I used William Sonoma's crust (made with butter, not shortening) which can be found here. The rest, I just threw in and didn't measure, but a William Sonoma's recipe (which pretty much looks like what I put together) can be found here (I didn't use tapioca). I also made some strawberry butter (with confectioner's sugar) with the leftover strawberries. I had some this morning for breakfast on toasted fruit bread with coffee. So good.

Yet another summer obsession of mine (there are many) is coral. Such a rich colour.

Most Adorable Children's Book Ever

I found the cutest book at Home Sense. It has no words, just illustrations. It is so unbelievably adorable, it actually makes me cry. I've flipped through the book three times. I cried three times. I'm such a sap. And those tears only cost me $0.70. LOVE the bargain section at Home Sense.

The book is called South by Patrick McDonnell. It's about a little bird, who falls asleep under a tree. He doesn't notice when his friends and family head off to begin their flight south. He wakes up, panics, and asks a cat for help. The pictures illustrate the friendship between the two, as the cat takes the little bird on a journey to find his friends. Charmingly simple and old fashioned. I'm completely in love.

I'll resist the urge to post the book in its entirety.

Weekend Bliss

It's the weekend. I'm so mellow and dreaming about being here, in South Carolina, at this gorgous beach house.

Of course, I'd also be enjoying a refreshing glass or two of Beach House Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon.

Happy Weekend

Desert Essence: Exceptional

I have fallen in love with a line of bath and body treats by Desert Essence. Like Origins, this company manufactures their products with the environment at the top of their list of priorities (in addition to monetary profit, of course). They are a cruelty-free company that does not test on animals and their ingredient lists are natural and chemical-free. They now have an Organics line that carries products which are vegan. I LOVE the coconut conditioner and body lotion.

They were the first company to introduce tea tree oil to the US.

I'm eager to try their SPF 30  (the packaging for this alone has me suckered into buying it) and the pistachio foot repair lotion.

How amazing does Spicy Citrus body lotion sound? And pumpkin hand repair? YUM!

La Vie En ROSE

My grandmother's garden has always been something to be admired. Not only do I appreciate such a lovely collection of rose bushes, but I admire the fact that my 85 year old grandmother can maintain a garden of this size to the point where it looks perfect. I couldn't help but get out my camera.

These ones are called "Sexy Rexy"

LOVE this colour.

Dream Home - Hawaii

I'm in love with a home that has a turquoise roof. It is aptly named The Beach House. It is featured in Dream Homes Magazine and is located on Lanikai Beach, Hawaii. This home has 7 bedrooms, 6 bath, and 4,162 sq ft of luxury. $2,250,000.000 for all this and a turquoise roof. Done.

Perfected: Grandma's Banana Nut Bread

My grandmother makes the most incredible banana bread. I've altered this recipe slightly to make it healthier. I LOVE a thick slice with coffee for breakfast, or drizzled with dulce de leche and topped with vanilla bean ice cream for dessert.

1/2 cup light olive oil
1 cup organic sugar
2 organic eggs, beaten
4 ripe bananas, mashed
2 cups organic whole wheat flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
3 tbsp milk
1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
1/2 to 3/4 cup almost-ground mixed nuts
(cashews, brazil nuts, macadamia, pecan and almond)

1. Beat oil and sugar together. Add eggs and banana pulp and beat well.
2. Add sifted dry ingredients, milk and vanilla.
3. In a small food processor, grind (or chop) nuts, then stir into mixture.
4. Divide batter in half, pour into two greased loaf pans (9 x 5 x 3 in)
5. Bake in preheated oven (350 F) for approx 45 minutes.
6. Enjoy!
